Outback getaway

Picture
Since 1997, The Rotary Club of  Toowoomba East Inc.  has operated the biennial Outback Getaway (OBG) as a fully managed and  catered outback adventure to raise funds for the  benefit of a number of community organisations and selected charities. Rotary has the reputation as volunteers supporting the community both locally and worldwide where it counts.

This  event appeals to those wishing to experience Outback hospitality not normally available to  the general public in a fully organised and supported environment. Farm stays and camping sites along with limited other accommodation are generally  the overnight venues. OBG aims to raise funds for the nominated beneficiaries and also add to the local economy. Where possible, OBG is keen to involve the local service and community groups to provide a unique catering and hospitality  experience.

Our 2021 adventure is planned to be held from Saturday 7 August to Saturday 14 August 2021.

OBG 2021  is open to all and  holds promise for a great event full of fun, fellowship, frivolity and fundraising. As we are presently in the final stages of route planing, the theme and places to be visited are yet to be confirmed. The Departure Dinner will be held on Friday, 6 August 2021, followed by an early morning start from Toowoomba. OGB 2021 is expected to finish at a location within one days drive to Toowoomba / Brisbane, the following day.

Whilst 4WD vehicles are recommended, the degree of difficulty is normally low but weather conditions can change that. Participation is limited to 35 vehicles with a maximum of 4 people per vehicle.

The organisers have completed previous OBGs and are experienced in outback road travel with safety being paramount in the planning and operation of the event. Night time brings a variety of entertainment including theme nights, our own travelling entertainers and fundraising through  auctions of numerous donated items.

Total distance travelled varies with each OBG. In 2019 we  travelled approximately 3,600 km  including daily stops enroute that gave opportunities to view something new and explore the history of a range western country towns and sites. The best part of OBG is the congeniality and fellowship between participants that generates the opportunity to renew former and create new friendships.

Our 2019 adventure was "Desert Dune Drive" held from Saturday 10 August to Saturday 17 August 2019.

2019 was our 12th OBG  and a great success raising a total of almost $45,000 with the main beneficiaries, the Rotary District 9630 Drought Relief Appeal, the Royal Flying Doctor Service and Australian Rotary Health Foundation (Mental Health research) receiving over $13,000 from the event. Other Rotary Club of Toowoomba East Inc. community projects received funding as a result of OBG 2019.
